Formerly under the name Metrovox, Yawn members Adam, Daniel, Jorge and Sam have been writing and playing music together since their days in high school in 2004. They formed a tight, friendship-based musical bond throughout these years playing in parents’ garages, basements, and friends’ houses throughout the North Side of Chicago. Their earlier work consisted of heavy, guitar-layered tracks with emotive, often raucous vocals. After recording material for over two years and eventually releasing a seven-song self-titled EP in September 2008, their musical palette had expanded, and they found themselves immediately eager to explore a wider range of sounds.
Artists like Brian Eno, Animal Collective and Aphex Twin, among an array of world music new and old, inspired the band to incorporate different concepts. Synths, samplers, rich harmonic layering, poly-rhythms, and dozens of digital gadgets provided the impetus to think in different ways and enjoy new methods of song-writing. However, with new toys came new obstacles. How were they to record? Bitter with the studio process, they decided to undertake this task on their own. And with Daniel and Adam now sharing an apartment, the flow of musical ideas, experimentation, and sheer time spent on the band had never been greater.
They set up their laptops with whatever consoles they could get their hands on, limited budget provided, and began work on a new set of songs in the winter of 2009. Hitting some speed bumps along the way, good friends aided them with advice and lent a hand with recording equipment and general moral support for the stylistic about-face they had just taken. The result was an explosion of exuberance packed into five songs. Never had the band sounded like this, or felt so confident in their originality and song-writing prowess. To keep the old name seemed unfitting. Referencing the disinterest in their older material as Metrovox, the band donned the moniker Yawn. The self-titled, self produced, E.P. was released on September 9th 2009. The band is currently writing material for a follow up and jumpstarting a record label, Drag and Drop with local DJs Friendship and Delacutti.
