Mushpot at Woodsist / Captured Tracks Festival: July 3-4, 2009

We were so excited to attend the Woodsist / Captured Tracks Festival during the weekend of July 4th, we could hardly contain ourselves. Chillaxing outside, drinking tallboys and listening to bands we love! HELLO! The first day was moved inside Market Hotel because of the threat of rain, which I totally appreciated (even though the rain ended up happening before the first band played). There is nothing I hate more than standing outside for long periods of time in the rain. Thank you, festival organizers for alleviating the stress of this being a possibility. Anyway, back to bands. So Liz and I were a little late – those tracking phone calls aren’t going to make themselves! We were sad to have missed The Gutsies but, you know, we’ll see them again and again and again. Until next time, we’ll keep blasting “Surfer Body,” which has officially been declared the “summer jam” of 2009. Our favorites might have been Toronto’s Little Girls and the debut of Dum Dum Girls + Blank Dogs collaboration, the Mayfair Set which, live, was a Dum Dum Girls/Blank Dogs/Crystal Stilts/Woods supergroup.

The second day was held at the scheduled 979 Broadway Backyard. We were thankfully on time to see Beach Fossils, which was a lovely way to begin the day. Real Estate had a couple of sound issues but they still played great. I have seen this band quite a few times and, seriously, they never disappoint. In fact, months later, I still remember their set at the Woodsist showcase at Ms. Bea’s as one of my top five things I loved at SXSW ‘09. The Beets also appeared to have had some equipment troubles but they powered through it all, as energetic and fun as ever. We were also super stoked to see Sacramento’s Ganglians, Dum Dum Girls, Woods and Thee Oh Sees. Dee Dee of Dum Dum Girls was debut-crazy this weekend, as this was also the first Dum Dum Girls live performance, with Blank Dogs, Frankie of Crystal Stilts and Brandon of Crocodiles joining her on stage. Newly signed to Sup Pop, Dee Dee is definitely Mushpot’s new hero and style icon, so seeing her perform faves like “Hey Sis” live was truly a highlight of the day.

I was able to capture some cell phone photos of some of the bands on Saturday but Brooklyn Vegan totally posted a photo of us Mushpotters enjoying Thee Oh Sees in their Day 2 recap. Thanks, guys!
